The Art of Zentangle

The book I co-authored with three other artists has been released, The Art of Zentangle.  You will find 40+ pages of my work in the book (I am the "yellow" section.) 

It is hard for me to believe that my first publication is a Walter Foster book.  They have been around for 90 years.  I remember seeing their books when I was a child.

I was excited when I learned they were going to use one of my tangles for the cover.  (See below.)

One Repetitive Pattern

Not a typical Zentangle, but it certainly uses a repetitive pattern.  I did this one in my moleskin and probably enjoyed filling in the negative space the most.  I totally zoned out doing it.

Octopus Tangle

This was a fun one to draw.  I then scanned it and embellished it with digital scrapbook paper.

There is something about the month of December that turns me into someone that can hardly wait for the New Year to begin.  I am back to my creative mode.

"Cultivate" - Illustration Friday

Illustration Friday's weekly topic is "cultivate".  Since most of my tangles are part of the Fantasy Garden series, this was an easy one for me.

I am getting ready for the upcoming Artfest in Washington.  The trip is becoming a pilgrimage for me.  I am creating Zentangle postcards for trades.  If I have any left after Artfest, I will put them up for swapping.

Lots of tangles

A lot of tangling has been happening lately at my place.  I started a new sketchbook.  The old one was looking rather haggard.  

Work is keeping me quite busy so it is nice to come home and zen out with pen and paper.

Zentangle - ZIA - Zentangle Inspired Art(ist)

When I talked to Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts a few weeks ago at the CHA Trade Show in Los Angeles, they told me about the newly coined word ZIA, Zentangle Inspired Artists.  
I believe my work belongs more in this category since I rarely make a classic Zentangle tile and rarely use a string to start my work.  But I do use repetitive patterns and find myself slipping into Zen mode.

Zentangle or a Doodle?

Seasoned Zentanglers know there is difference between tangling and doodling.  When I was drawing this, I felt it was more of a doodle than a tangle - perhaps because I wasn't using traditional Zentangle patterns.  Yet, I was using repetitive patterns to create a piece of art.  And I was certainly in the Zen mode.  What is the difference?

After I finished drawing it, I scanned it and embellished it with digital scrapbook paper using PhotoShop.

Swarm - Illustration Friday

Illustrations Friday's weekly topic is "Swarm."  Here is my interpretation.  I drew this when I was first learning about Zentangle (several years ago).  I filled up several sketchbooks using very basic patterns.  It is fun to go back and look at them now.

Oscar's Tangle

My friend Oscar died Friday night of a heart attack.  He fought obesity all of his life. This tangle is in memory of him.

He tried desperately to lose the weight.  Three years ago he lost 500 pounds and was able to leave his bed and walk again.  After he broke his leg, he gained back 300 pounds and once again was bed ridden.
